Getting a new sofa or chair is an exciting prospect. At the Kensington Sofa Company we want to help you make sure it fits through all the access points and in your living space. Please take a little time to read our guide below on how to measure your sofa or chair.

Can your sofa fit through the access points?

Measure the height (H) and width (W) of your door.

Make sure the path around the doorway is clear and unobstructed.

Consider any fixtures and fittings or immovable objects such as gas meters and radiators.

Measuring the diagonal depth (DD) of the sofa or chair will help you to understand whether it will go through the door at an angle. From the side of the sofa or chair, measure from the top left or right corner of armrest to the opposite bottom corner.

To get your furniture through the doorway it may help to place the sofa or chair on one end and twist it into the doorway seat first.

Measure the length between the door and interior wall to ensure there is enough room to manoeuvre the furniture into the desired room. You may need to stand the sofa or chair on its end or twist it into the doorway.

Measure the height (H), width (W) and depth (D) of the stairwell to allow turning on the stairs.

Please note that different floors may have different stairwell heights and note if there are any doors or turns in the stairwell.

If You Use A Lift

Measure the height and width of the lift door and the dimensions inside the lift, including the diagonal height from the bottom front to the top back, in case the sofa or chair needs to fit into the lift at an angle.

  • Please contact us to find out the furniture weight to ensure it is within the maximum load limit of the lift.

Where to place your sofa or chair?

To be sure that your new sofa or chair fits into your room, at the Kensington Sofa Company, we suggest using masking tape to mark out the amount of space it requires.

Check that you have enough room to move around your sofa or chair and to open doors and drawers once it’s in place.

Don’t forget to also measure the height of the area where your sofa or chair will be positioned to ensure it can be manoeuvred into place.

To gauge a safe distance between your leather furniture and a radiator to prevent cracking, move your hand away from the radiator until you can no longer feel its heat; at minimum, this should be about a foot (30cm).

How to measure your furniture?

All sofa, chair or footstool measurements can be found in the product listings at www.kensingtonsofas.co.uk. You can also contact our customer services team on 01582 840 717.

Our sofa, chair or footstool dimensions are in centimetres in the format Width x Height x Depth (W x H x D cm). We provide the assembled dimensions, with legs and cushions included.

Your furniture will be delivered in its packaging and there may be some instances where removing the packaging will help get the sofa or chair into the house. However, this will be done at the customer’s risk.

Most of our sofas or chairs have removable legs, feet and cushions to facilitate delivery into smaller spaces. Please see the product page on our website or contact customer services on 01582 840 717 for more information.

What should you consider before the delivery?

We deliver on vehicles that are about the size of a fire engine or refuse lorry.

Please contact customer service on 01582 840 717 to let us know of any issues getting to your street, such as:
 – narrow lanes
 – low bridges
 – parking restrictions e.g. permits required, schools, red routes.

What to do once you’ve received your furniture?

Please inspect your order thoroughly before signing the delivery paperwork.

Any flaws, defects or signs of transit damage should also be documented alongside your signature; in this event, please contact our customer services team immediately on 01582 840 717 or contact us via email.
